Without a microwave
We have been without a microwave since last August. One day I was heating up diced zucchiniΒ on a paper towel and BOOM – red arcing lights and zapping sounds then a poof of flames as large as in any fireplace were shooting up in our microwave! Ok, that scared me! We unplugged it and told ourselves we’d get a new one. That was half a year ago, and we only just this week had a new one put in.
It’s handy to have again. But we’ve realized something important: WE DON’T NEED IT!! And we love that. It really freed us from our fast-paced mindset. We have a stove. We have an oven. And those things work perfectly well, and it only takes a bit more time and preparation to do it. But it is SO doable! As I should well know…my parents did a heck of a great job raising me and my three siblings without a microwave throughout our childhood! Only excellent, home-cooked meals for us!
That’s what I want to provide for my family too. It was a start, to realize we don’t NEED the microwave. Sure it’s fast. Sure it’s convenient. But somehow you just can’t beat a stove-top or oven-cooked taste.
There’s also some concern about what microwave rays can do to the quality of food you’re eating. It’s been said that it diminishes the nutritious qualities of food, and it’s also possible that it may ADD harmful byproducts to your food. This hasn’t been proven as far as I know, but why not be safer rather than sorry. As far as we are concerned, we will just use this asΒ a back up in a pinch, or for a quick reheat of something, or if we’re just plain in a huge old hurry. π
How do you feel about your microwave? Couldn’t live without it? Don’t have or want one? Or like us do you feel it has its uses?
